MazzaBUG – Melbourne’s Inner West Bicycle User’s Group

MazzaBUG welcomes people from the City of Maribyrnong, surrounding suburbs and those who ride to, from or through our slice of Melbourne, Australia. We are a non-profit, volunteer-run organisation made up of people who enjoy riding, whether to work, recreation or sport. We act as a voice for cyclists in the west of Melbourne to try to improve the bike infrastructure in this area. We conduct monthly rides in interesting places which all can attend for no cost. Usually these rides are suitable for beginning cyclists. Twice per year (at least) we run bike maintenance sessions to help people understand their bikes better.

The fifth-last MazzaBUG ride

. . . was on the 4th May 2008, where we again met at Platform 4, Footscray Station at 10am to ride the “Western Arc”. That is, along the capital city trail to Merri Creek, then up Merri Creek where we had lunch/brunch at Ceres Environment Park which was lovely and delicious. Then we kept riding upstream, through Coburg, past the lake there, and then onto the Western Ring Road trail. The Western Ring Road Trail is fairly boring in contrast with the Merri Creek trail. Eventually we made it to the Federation Trail and thus back into the inner west. Total distance was 60 to 70km.

The fourth-last MazzaBUG ride

. . . was on Sunday 29th June when we caught the train from Southern Cross Station to Lalor on the Epping line, and rode to the historic remnant settlement of Westgarthtown (thanks Hector for sussing this out), and then south and east through charming rustic cottages no, wait, that was what we left behind . . . monotonous 1970s suburbia, along the ring road path a way, to the whole lot more interesting and scenic Darebin Creek path. We headed south along here to Ivanhoe, where we got out of the cold, blustery north (tail) wind for lunch at a cafe in the centre of the burg, dropped off a few refuseniks at the station just in time for the train, then headed south-west through Fairfield, Northcote, Fitzroy North, Parkville and West Melbourne to the Footscray Rd. bike path.

The third-last MazzaBUG ride

. . . was on Sunday 14th September. We took the train out to Mitcham Station and rode on the new bike path that runs down Dandenong Creek and along the new EastLink motorway. Particularly interesting was the end of the ride where we ended up riding alongside the Carrum Sewerage Treatment facility. Very lush green grass! Some of the braver souls then rode back to Melbourne from Carrum whereas the less enduring took a train back west. A welcome start to the warmer months again.

Second last MazzaBUG Ride

MazzaBUG’s next ride is on Sunday 19th October – we will do a large loop in the west. We will do the Federation Trail to Werribee and meet people at Werribee Station who do not want to do a very large ride. From there we will ride down to Werribee South via K Road and the cliffs, and then come back up towards Point Cook,  Altona Meadows, Altona, and back towards Footscray via the western bay trail. People will be able to “bail out” (BYO parachute) at Laverton Station, Westona Station, and so on. So the ride can be as short or as long as you would like!

More details to be sent shortly (if you don’t get them – get on the e-mail list – drop us a short one and we’ll add you. Our last carrier pigeon died of boredom some time ago), but the start will be at the Millers Road end of Federation Trail at 9am and we will plan to meet people at Werribee Station on the 11:16am train (leaves Flinders Street at 10:25am).

Last Mazza BUG adventure December 14th 2008:

Bike ride from Seaholme Station in Altona to Point Cook Coastal Park. There, a gourmet BBQ was had: prawns, kangaroo, beautiful sausages, steak, lamb, skewers, saganaki, wines chosen by Sommelier Nixon, finished roundly with a lovely butter cakes with lashings of mixed berry coulis and cream. We then walked/rode to Point Cook (the actual Point Cook not the suburb) and a coffee at the homestead cafe there. A great day.

Next MazzaBUG meeting is Wednesday 28th January 2009 7pm at Hector’s house – 32 Glamis Road, West Footscray – ALL NEW PEOPLE WELCOME,  Any questions please ring Hector on 0458 521 102.
